History
The year 1969 is the moment when the location of the new Targu-Mures Airport was inaugurated, equipped with concrete runway and modern aviation techniques. New type of aircrafts started to operate such as: AN 24 and ATR 42 connecting Targu-Mures with Bucharest, Constanta, Cluj-Napoca and Budapest. From 1968 till today the airport supported important changes and improvements. Due to the active involvement of the airport leadership as well as having the support of Mures County Council in the days there are lot of modernizing works having as main purpose transformation of the unit in a strategic point for the country’s Central Zone economy.
   Extension of Terminal for international flights

Surface = 1.800 m2 Capacity = 450 pax/hour. Standard equipped check in, security, customs services Passengers facility: restaurant, teras, fast food, VIP room, mother and child room, commercial surface, rent a car, ticketing, insurance, reservation of services, medical room, information desk, check in desks.

   Modernization of runway lighting system

- complementary for existing ILS cat II installed in 2002
- type: IDMAN cat. I OACI with 7 steps of intensity
- main direction 072° with directionary wire popper
- secondary direction 252° simplified approach lights wire

GAC Hamburg - German Airport Consulting GmbH from Hamburg Airport its one of our closest friends who helped Targu-Mures Airport to set up its development projects. Settled up for the first time in 1999 due to experimental changes, the relationship between the two parts continued in the following years with the training of specialized staff, the achievement of a market study and recommendations regarding future collaborations with German partners. ARC - Airport Regions Conference is an organization set up in 1996, joining the most important regions of Europe, having in their area an international airport, as a final point the development and promotion of those areas in accordance with UE policy. After few months of “tests”, Mures County Council had been accepted due to Targu-Mures Airport, as a full member of ARC during its session held in June 2002 at Haarlem, Holland. The same session meant an opportunity of nominating Mr. Petru Stefan Runcan, general manager of Targu-Mures Airport as a member of ARC Transportation Committee. Link: www.airportregions.org
